We installed solar power to our home in Spain
And saved a fortune. You can too
Hi there, my name is Ellis. Together with my partner Jo (Josephine) we run both our home and solar business here in Spain entirely off our own stand alone photovoltaic power system. The good news is a solar power system is amazingly simple. DC solar panels charge DC batteries. The DC power then goes through an inverter which changes it to AC (normal domestic) electric current. A charge controller monitors the system and that's it. With a few simple instructions and the help of your local electrician you too can install a working system. More good news, it's far better than being joined to the grid. The Spanish electricity companies are notoriously unreliable and our neighbours are frequently without electricity whereas we never have any downtime. We have all the electricity we need 24 hours a day seven days a week – and it’s FREE.
We moved from Malaga to Valencia early in 2008 to start a new ‘greener’ life and reduce our carbon footprint. We found an old house that had no electricity supply and had previously been powered by a generator. That was the easy bit. Finding someone to supply and install the solar electric equipment was much harder. We were visited by the usual rag bag assortment of ‘experts’ (if you’ve lived in Spain for any time you’ll know what I mean) and we also found people in whom we had confidence but their prices were simply unaffordable. So we decided to set up our own business. Our first job was our own installation.
